MS Amlin, the Lloyd’s global re/insurer, announced the opening of an Australian branch office in Sydney, subject to Lloyd’s approval.
Leading the branch office is Matt Botfield who has been named head of Australia and New Zealand. The office will be a branch of MS Amlin’s Asia Pacific Reinsurance business, MS Amlin Pacific Pte.Ltd.
Botfield joins MS Amlin from Aon Reinsurance China, where he was chief operating officer for Greater China and CEO of Alternate Insurance Authority Hong Kong, a role he held since 2016. Prior to this, Botfield spent 14 years at Aon Benfield, in several senior roles, including head of Property Australia and New Zealand.
MS Amlin has a strong and growing reinsurance presence in the Asia Pacific market, the company said. Under regional CEO Will Ho and his team, MS Amlin offers reinsurance solutions across the majority of its product lines including casualty, property and speciality covers. These solutions are already available through conventional reinsurance structures as well as via its Phoenix ILS offering.
A growing proportion of risks written by the Asia Pacific team stem from Australia and New Zealand. As part of its growth strategy, the company is setting up a branch office to give it on-the-ground presence and impact.
Botfield will support the existing client portfolio in Australia and New Zealand and ongoing broker relationships managed by the Asia-Pacific team in Singapore. As well as overseeing new business development to help further facilitate growth, he will utilize MS Amlin’s broader underwriting capabilities to develop solutions for clients in the region.
The operations in Australia will be accretive and not disruptive to the current portfolio written from London, the company said.
