MORTON — A Morton City Council member working in agronomy has won the DFL endorsement to run for the House District 16A seat that has been in Republican hands for 22 years.

Kathy Jorgenson will face Scott Van Binsbergen, of Montevideo, the Republican party's endorsed candidate for the seat currently held by Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Acton Township. Urdahl is serving his 11th term in the Legislature, and announced earlier this spring his decision not to seek re-election.

Jorgenson has lived in Morton for four years and is on the City Council there as well as being active in the Morton Community Foundation, according to a news release announcing her candidacy.

She has a master’s degree in natural resources management from North Dakota State University. She has worked at Central Regions Cooperative as an agronomist. Before moving to Minnesota, she ran for the state Legislature in North Dakota, according to the release.

Jorgenson grew up on a ranch in western North Dakota and continues to ride horses. She is the mother of three adult children.

She emphasized her concern for rural issues in announcing her candidacy. She would like to see fiber-optic internet services extended to all residents, and supports legislation for beginning farmers and to develop food distribution networks to extend markets for local farmers. She wants to improve health care options for rural areas, increase the availability of child care and increase affordable housing in rural Minnesota, according to the release.

House District 16A includes all of Renville and Chippewa counties, the west side of Meeker County and the southeastern corner of Kandiyohi County.
