2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464) Expected To Debut At 2018 Detroit Auto Show

Redesigned in 1990, the W463 is one of the automotive world’s dinosaurs. An old design bettered once in a while, the G-Class prepares to welcome an all-new model in the coming months. And as per MB Passion Blog, the W464 will finally debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, held in Detroit.

The cited publication goes even further, expecting the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class to go on sale in Germany in January 2018, with the first examples coming to dealer lots in May 2018. At first, the three-pointed star is rumored to offer two variants in the form of the G 500 and the Mercedes-AMG G 63. A bit later on, the turbo diesel-powered G 350d will be added to the range.

On the flip side, MB Passion Blog believes that the G-Class will lose three derivatives: the G 500 4x4 Squared, G 350d Professional, and the G65. The latter is the least likely to give up the ghost, partially because it offers a crazy profit margin. Another possibility is the Maybach-ization of the G65, meaning that the V12 G-Class could soldier on as the Mercedes-Maybach G650.

Augmented by a wider track and revised lighting, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be offered with independent front suspension and electro-mechanical steering. A couple of changes are in the offing for the cabin as well, an area where you’ll find better infotainment solutions and more comfort than what the W463 offers. Think improvements across the board.

The W464 has big shoes to fill, and that’s not because Magna Steyr signed off the 300,000th example at its plant in Graz, Austria only recently. As you know from music videos and your city’s poshest street, the G-Class is a status symbol for the rich and famous. Mercedes-Benz will make sure the newcomer will carry the same appeal, if not even more bragging rights than its foregoer.

And so, let the waiting game begin!
